Barangaroo South Sustainability Report 2021 - 2023
Inspiring Town Planners of the Future World Town Planning Day is held annually in October and gives NSW High School students in Years 7 to 11 the unique opportunity to expand their understanding of town planning and put it into practice. The annual competition is a collaboration between the Observatory Hill Environment and Education Centre (OHEEC), Lendlease and the City of Sydney who come together to present and judge the student entries. Hosted by the OHECC, participants start by watching an online presentation that delves into the intricacies of Town Planning, Urban Development and Social Impact, including the steps developers and planners go through to make a place more liveable. Students put their knowledge and understanding to the test by competing to create the best town centre possible, encompassing their ideas into a masterplan template. They must consider zoning the land for residential, commercial and recreational use, and accounting for transport, education, medical and public facilities, historic buildings, emergency services, sustainability and anything else that makes a town inherently well- designed. Book vouchers were awarded for the winning entries. All entrants must include a written design description, outlining the reasons for their decisions. The impact of this initiative is reflected in the enthusiasm and engagement it fosters amongst participants, inspiring the next generation of town planners to thrive. “Since 2021, [Lendlease Social Impact Manager] Katherine Bushell and Lendlease have supported Observatory Hill Environment and Education Centre’s goal to offer engaging lessons to high school students across NSW. The event reaches hundreds of students from Years 7 to 11 each year. Katherine has generously donated her time to help teach students how to create sustainable places. The team at OHEEC is grateful for the support and partnership Katherine has helped to build with Lendlease through this engaging activity for students.” —Austin Brooks, Teacher, Observatory Hill Environment and Education Centre.
