Volunteering to Elevate Youth Empowering young people in remote Indigenous communities NASCA’s Remote Volunteering Program is a week-long cultural immersion experience that provides an invaluable opportunity for corporate and community volunteers to work alongside NASCA. The initiative involves mentoring and supporting young people in remote communities, while helping to bolster school attendance, strengthen cultural pride and make empowered life choices. In August 2022, Lendlease Site Foreman, Daniel Boyd, participated in this transformative program and spent a week working in an Indigenous community called Yuelamu, around 3.5 hours Northwest of Alice Springs. “Helping out with the community and teachers was a truly life changing experience which I was so proud to be part of,” said Daniel. “I managed to raise $8000 to support the program. I’d encourage anyone to apply if you are keen to engage with and understand more about Community.” 17 In August 2023 Lendlease Development Manager, Francesca Bell was selected to participate in the Remote Volunteering Program, alongside two other team members from Lendlease’s Social Impact and Environmental Sustainability Teams. Francesca was stationed in a remote community in Canteen Creek, a 7-hour drive north of Alice Springs. She worked with NASCA and other volunteers to help students from Owairtilla Canteen Creek School with everything from classwork and cooking to running an after-school sport program. Highlights included learning some of the local language from the students, hosting a community barbecue for over 200 people and travelling through breathtaking Northern Territory country. The experience not only enriched the lives of the participating youth but also provided our team members with a life changing experience, further solidifying our commitment to our Reconciliation Action Plan, social impact and community development.
