Barangaroo South Sustainability Report 2021 - 2023

Our commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in the workplace extends to various partnerships and programs aimed at providing meaningful career opportunities, mentoring and career development for First Nations peoples and other underrepresented groups. When proud Yuin woman, Kristen Martin, connected with CareerTrackers in her first semester of university, she couldn’t have foreseen how the empowering experience would both immerse her in the world of Lendlease’s Social Impact initiatives, and turn into a permanent role. CareerTrackers is an organisation which supports pre-professional Indigenous university students and links them with employers to participate in paid internships. For Kristen, who is studying a Bachelor of Linguistics and Language Sciences at Macquarie University, Lendlease was the perfect placement. “I had some preconceptions about what the corporate world was like but seeing the genuine commitment that Lendlease has in terms of social value, was something I hadn’t expected,” she says. During Kristen’s internship working with the Social Impact team, she was entrusted with making external connections with First Nations businesses and working on collaborations with First Nations artists on project celebrations, alongside time spent meeting the wider Lendlease team and doing site tours. “One of the highlights was seeing firsthand the projects that Lendlease was working on in Barangaroo. Coming from Muswellbrook, a small regional town, and walking into some of the luxury apartments they’ve developed was amazing. All the staff were friendly, and being able to prove myself, to show that I’m committed to putting all my strength into every task I was given, paid off, too. I was offered work for two days a week, and it was great to see projects that I initiated or joined, become something real.” As Kristen continues her degree over the next two years, she has her sights set on working in First Nations language revitalisation. The experience at Lendlease has provided her not just with opportunities but with a broader understanding of what’s possible. “Programs like CareerTrackers are important for closing the gap in terms of getting Indigenous students into the workforce early on. It’s great to have Indigenous people gain that experience and see what the corporate world looks like, so we can build a place for ourselves. Then when other Mob come in, we can support them, in the same way that I was supported by Lendlease’s First Nations Talent Manager, Catherine Martin, who is the support person for Indigenous staff at Lendlease,” she says. “It was incredible for me to get that corporate office experience and to be able to contribute to the business in a way that feels valuable.” Reflecting Kristen’s experience, our goal is not just to offer temporary work experience but to provide a pathway to long-term employment and career growth, supporting the economic and social well-being of marginalised communities. We are proud to share in Kristen’s journey as part of our commitment to creating an additional $250 million in social value by 2025.
